YWCA Event on May 18 Will Honor Women Making Exceptional Contributions to Lawrence

 

Nine Lawrence women who make exceptional contributions to the community are among those who will be honored at the YWCA of Greater Lawrence fundraising event on May 18. The Tribute to Women awards luncheon takes place Thursday, May 18 from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. at Andover Country Club. Altogether, 22 women from the Greater Lawrence area will be recognized for their outstanding work and for serving as role models in their professions and in service to their communities.  The nine women who live or work in Lawrence are:

  • Maria Carles, Ph.D., Professor of Natural Sciences at Northern Essex Community College, Lawrence Campus
  • Kim Clark, Managing Owner, National Fiber Technology, LLC
  • Gerry-Lynn Darcy, Senior Vice President, Lupoli Companies
  • Joanna de Peña, Founder and Executive Director, Top Notch Scholars
  • Janin Duran, Executive Director, Epara Todos
  • Evelyn Friedman, Executive Director, Greater Lawrence Community Action Council
  • Andrea Luppi, Manager, Communications and Community Relations, Columbia Gas Co. of Mass.
  • Wanny Muñoz, Director of Programming, The Chica Project
  • Caitlin Rivet, Site Nurse Manager, Greater Lawrence Family Health Center.

Tribute to Women is the largest single fundraiser of the year to support the YWCA’s programs and services in Greater Lawrence and surrounding communities across the Merrimack Valley and Essex County. The YWCA operates an emergency shelter for victims of domestic violence; offers free confidential counseling and court advocacy for domestic violence a victims; free and confidential comprehensive rape crisis services in Lynn, Haverhill and Lawrence; year-round childcare for infants through 13-year-olds at two sites in Lawrence and one in Haverhill; a summer day camp for children 5-13 in Salem, NH, and free confidential health advocacy services for women.

 

Pfizer (Andover) is the main sponsor of the 2017 Tribute to Women.  The YWCA is also celebrating 125 years of service to Lawrence this year. It was founded in 1892 to offer safe affordable housing and other services to immigrant girls and young women coming to work in Lawrence’s mills.
