Shameful!

We dedicated our Editorial from the May 22 issue to the importance of Memorial Day and the fact that May 29 was a national day dedicated to honoring our fallen heroes of all wars.

We addressed our commentary to immigrants who have found refuge in this great country, especially those who have lived under dictatorial regimes where human life is worthless. We said that observing Memorial Day was very important, especially now that so many people confuse the true meaning of the day with outdoor snacks, trips to the beaches or buying a new car.

Unfortunately, the community did not respond to the call. If it is not for the veterans who attended massively to pay tribute to their comrades buried there, the event would have had only with the organizers. What a shame!

As for the assistance of elected officials… what can we say? It leaves much to be desired. There we found Mayor Rivera, of course. State Representatives Frank Moran and Diana DiZoglio joined him as well as Councilors David Abdoo, Marc Laplante and Jeovanny Rodriguez in addition to the former councilmen Roger Twomey and Nicholas Kolofoles.

To those who did not attend the event, we want to remind them of the following passage from a John Hagee sermon:
“It’s the soldier not the reporter who gives you the freedom of the press. It’s the soldier not the poet who gives you the freedom of speech. It’s the soldier not the campus organizer who allows you to demonstrate. It’s the soldier who salutes the flag, serves the flag, whose coffin is draped with the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag!”

And all you had to do was go there and say Thanks!
