Mayor Stephen Zanni and Chief Joseph Solomon are pleased to announce that the Methuen Police Department will participate in the annual Kiwanis Bicycle Safety Rodeo next month and encourage the community to attend. It will be held on Saturday, June 10 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Target parking lot, 67 Pleasant Valley St., Methuen.

As part of the annual bike rodeo, Methuen Police will teach young children about bicycle safety including bicycle laws, and how to effectively and safely share the road with pedestrians and motor vehicles. Participants are asked to bring their own bikes and helmets to the rodeo for safety checks and inspections.

“Teaching children about bicycle safety at a young age is extremely important so they develop good habits as they grow up,” Mayor Zanni said. “This event is always extremely popular among residents and we hope to have another great turnout this year.”

In addition to safety instruction and inspections, attendees can explore a Methuen Fire truck, watch Methuen Police K-9 demonstrations and participate in a raffle for new bicycles. Attendees should note that the raffle will take place at 11:45 a.m. and winners must be present to receive their prize.

“We enjoy hosting this event each year and teaching our young residents about bicycle safety,” Chief Solomon said. “I would like to thank all of our partners and sponsors, and would like to especially thank Sgt. Jack Walsh from our Community Outreach Unit for all of his efforts working with our partners to make this event happen.”

Event sponsors include The Kiwanis Club of Greater Lawrence, AAA, Target, Methuen Police, the Methuen Firefighters Union Local 1691, Lawrence General Hospital, the Merrimack Valley YMCA, Bellmores Transportation and Bada Bing Pizza & Wings.
