Central Catholic chose the Atkinson Country Club to honor the incoming athletes that will be inducted on this great evening for this school’s former athletes and supporters of this very vibrant sports and academic complex.
The Master of Ceremonies for tonight’s affair would be long time school sports fan and friend of the school for many years, Andover Atty. Michael Morris whose brother Ted was a multi-sport star at this Marist school. Ted went on to become and still is a Marist brother. I watched him play many times as a kid. Mike was a 1959 CCHS grad.
The invocation was delivered by Bishop William Mc Naughton who was a 1944 grad of the school but tells everyone it was 1844
Atty. Morris led the full house to a fine dinner and the Champagne awards. His partner in his law firm and longtime friend Larry Rossi read off this year’s Hall of Fame inductees.
Brother Tom Long who grew up on Eutaw St. in Lawrence as a kid and is now the President of the school, gave some very positive remarks. Tom’s dad was a lineman for the Lawrence Electric Co.; his older brother Charlie and I played on a CYO baseball team together. We later became electric co linemen and became pole partners for years. Charlie still lives in the area. The closing remarks to this evening’s gala event was given by Atty. Morris.
Past Champagne Award Winners: The St Theresa Award for outstanding achievement went to R.Kingman Webster, awarded for services to CCHS.
The Sr. Julie Award for outstanding achievement to Louise L Schiavone, class of 1968 St. Mary’s
Brother Linus humanitarian award to Steve Kelley, class of 1964. Whatever happened to Steve? Well, he’s only a kids’ magnet at the Boys and Girls Club with a building named after him, a true Saint on Earth.
I will be naming this year’s inductees to this Hall of Fame in future editions. There are many names and stories to write on this subject and we will carry the ball.
