GLCAC Offers Home Safety Repair Program for Seniors

The Greater Lawrence Community Action Council, Inc. is now accepting applications for Project SENIOR, a free home safety repair program for residents 60 years and older living in Andover, Lawrence, Methuen, North Andover.

Project SENIOR helps senior citizens live safely in their homes by fixing common safety problems that can lead to injury. Examples include:

  • Broken steps, decks and ramps.
  • Missing or loose handrails.
  •  No shower or bathroom grab bars.
  • Clutter that poses a trip hazard or blocks an exit.
  • Malfunctioning bathroom fans.

“We understand the challenges seniors face and this is one way we can help them live safely and independently in their own homes,’’ said Evelyn Friedman, GLCAC’s executive director.

The program is operated by GLCAC and funded by Wells Fargo. Founded as a collaboration between GLCAC and the Lawrence Community Development Department, the program has helped more than 100 seniors since 2005.

The deadline to apply for assistance is Dec. 31, 2017. For more information or to apply, contact Anthony R. Bruno at 978-681-4956.

GLCAC is a multi-faceted social services agency that assisted 31,702 individuals in 2016 through a range of programs including early childhood education, fuel assistance, WIC nutrition assistance, immigration services, lead poisoning prevention, child abuse prevention, English-language lessons, and consumer protection.
