Reyes Inks Professional Deal in the Dominican Republic

Senior captain Cecilia Reyes of the Merrimack College women’s basketball program signed a professional contract recently in the National Women’s Basketball League in the Dominican Republic, and has begun her professional career playing for the Indias del Sur.

Reyes – whose parents were born in the Dominican Republic – joined the team for its fourth game of the season, nearly totaling a triple-double to lead Indias del Sur to victory. The Lawrence, Mass. native appeared in 16 career games including one start for the Warriors over the last two seasons, joining the program as a walk-on her junior year before being named team captain entering the 2017-18 campaign.

It has been an exciting spring for Reyes, who before heading to the Dominican Republic earned a pair of recognitions at Merrimack’s Leadership, Education, Athletic and Development (LEAD) Awards ceremony last week. Reyes received the Travis G. Kong Award, which is given to a member of the senior class recognizing outstanding service to the Merrimack College community, and the Female Comeback Student-Athlete of the Year as Reyes battled through an offseason knee injury to play for the Warriors this season.

The shooting guard is set to graduate this spring with a triple major in Business, Psychology and Spanish. Reyes has also started to work towards her Master of Science in Management at Merrimack’s Girard School of Business.
