Community Television in Haverhill – Teaching the way

By Dalia Diaz

One of the best means of communication of local issues is the Community Access channel in any city or town.  Most around the Merrimack Valley are very professional providing a variety of programs involving residents in the different skills needed to bring good information to all.

Haverhill Community Television excels in their training, recruitment of volunteers and producing quality programming.  The purpose is having enough interest in local news and issues to get out in the community and cover it for television.

On October 1, Lindsay Paris held an On-Camera Presentation Seminar and we had the opportunity to find out more about how they work.  “I hold this class a few times during the year because I believe that you learn by doing,” she said.  “Having someone coaching you is very important for the final outcome.”

She has been the news producer of Haverhill Journal since 2013 and is also manager of the Harbor Place studio where we met.

This enormous space located on the ground floor was purchased by Darlene Beal, Executive Director of Haverhill Community Television while the building was being built.  It’s surrounded by glass windows and anyone can go by and see that it boasts the most modern equipment.

The main office and studios are located on Elm Street and they have been able to achieve all of this with 5% of Comcast’s earnings and subscribers revenue.

They have approximately 100 volunteers able to do different chores and 40 producers bringing to Haverhill residents everything they should know about their communities.  Even if live outside of that city, you can find them at HC Media on YouTube.
