Lawrence High School Theater Takes Top Honors at National Performing Arts Festival
It was a special February vacation for the Lawrence High School theater program, which returned home from the National Performing Arts Festival at Universal Studios with new additions to the trophy case.
In addition to workshops with Broadway professionals on acting, singing and dancing, 35 LHS students performed a piece from their fall presentation of “In the Heights” and 10 cast members competed in the solo competitions.
As a cast, the Lancers were awarded Ensemble Excellence in Choreography, the Judge’s Trophy for High Achievement, and the festival’s top honor for highest score – the Showcase Trophy.
In the solo competition, sophomore Carolina Sanchez and senior Kiara Felix each won medals for a Superior Rating; senior Kevin Reyes, Carolina Sanchez and Kiara Feliz won medals for the Spotlight Awards for Excellence in Performance in the ensemble competition.
“I want to congratulate our performing students, theater coach Laurie Donlan, and the entire LHS community on their success,” said LPS Superintendent Ralph Carrero. “They continue to confirm for the rest of the world what all of us in Lawrence have known for a long time – we are home to exceptionally talented and hard-working students who will shine every chance they get.”
Lawrence High School Theater is hard at work preparing for its spring presentation of “Miss Saigon” at the LHS Performing Arts Center on April 4, 5, 11 and 12 at 6pm.
