In a message posted in Face Book, City Councilor Elect Andy Vargas wrote:
“We did it! Thank you. Last night confirmed that the greatest capital in life comes in the form of family, friends, dedicated supporters and believers. These, combined with hard work, sacrifice and passion, can usher in a real and positive change. Thank you Haverhill; let’s get to work.”
This message describes the personality of a 22-year-old Haverhill resident that instead of going drinking in frivolous entertainment, jumping from one night club to another, showed his maturity projecting his message towards his community, his city, his state and beyond.
Even when Vargas made history for being the first Latino elected in the history of Haverhill, making proud a lot of us, he was not elected for such. He was elected because of his track record.
Andy attended public schools. It was here where he got his first taste for civic engagement, working as a leader of the Violence Intervention and Prevention Team. While attending Boston University, he continued this passion for public service; interning in the State House for Brian Dempsey, Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, the US Embassy in Spain and the White House.
Now at home, and as an elected official, Andy wants to attract new businesses, tackle our opioid crisis, focus on youth issues and build a future that will keep young families and our seniors here.
Andy has a message for his supporters: “I believe we can do incredible things together. I believe that the success, efficiency, and quality of our democracy are dependent upon your decision to actively participate in elections, community organizations, and activism.
Ultimately, as your Haverhill City Council, I promise to bring these values of transparency, innovation, and community engagement to work towards a bright future for Haverhill.”
This is the kind of leadership that every community needs!
