The City Attorney dilema
People close to me have told me that I am a glutton for punishment; I have to believe it’s true. I struggle watching the Personnel Committee meeting and then the rerun just to confirm some things that seemed hard to believe. I hope you take the time to read “The City Attorney and Council Dilemma” on page 7 and let’s see if you come to the same conclusions.

Carmen Chalas and I were talking on her show last Monday night about Mayor Dan Rivera and the fact that he is loyal and takes care of his friends. He made Abel Vargas director of economic and business development with a $70,000 salary.
After four and one half years and nothing to show for except for loyalty and campaign work, he appointed him just by pointing at him as executive director of the Workforce Investment Board. No need of advertising for the position or interviewing other candidates – after all, he is the CEO of this farm.
For his devotion, Abel got a $45,000 raise. I don’t know if that’s official but that’ what he’s been telling his friends. His new salary is $115,000.
Looking for Puerto Rican Leaders
Frankie Caraballo is organizing a meeting for the purpose of looking for leaders within the Puerto Rican community. There are major problems and injustices occurring and we don’t have a voice. Perhaps a gathering of this sort will awaken the leadership qualities we so desperately need.
The meeting is scheduled at the Lawrence Public Library on Thursday, August 30th from 6 to 8 p.m.
Freecycle
Every city has a site where people OFFER or WANT something. The item gets posted and those interested on what they are giving away can reply with an email. Perhaps they are looking for something you no longer want or need; just send an email and they’ll come to pick it up.
The only requirement is that no money should be exchanged or you will get kicked out. I signed up to some of these websites and I have used them sometimes to either give or take.
My reason for writing about this is because I found this posting and called my attention: “I am looking for a toaster over in great condition.” Subscribers usually say if the item needs repairs, is damaged or brand new so there will be no surprises. You are under no obligation to take it with you once you see it. But please, take into consideration that you are asking for something to be given to you free of charge.
What would that person do if I am willing to give her my toaster oven in no so great condition? Since I don’t know what her reaction will be, I won’t reply.
