Tufts Medicine Care at Home Awards Memorial Scholarship to
Methuen Nursing Student Angela Geronimo Quevedo
Lawrence, Mass. (June 22, 2023) – Tufts Medicine Care at Home has awarded a scholarship presented annually in memory of a former employee to Methuen resident Angela Geronimo Quevedo, who graduated last month from the Health Assisting program at Greater Lawrence Technical School in Andover.
Quevedo, who is bilingual in English and Spanish, plans to attend the College of Nursing and Health Sciences at UMass Boston this fall.
The $500 scholarship was established in 1995 as a tribute to Lisa Santiago Ventura, who sustained fatal injuries after being struck during a high-speed police chase while driving to care for a patient. In her memory, Tufts Medicine Care at Home awards the annual Lisa Santiago Ventura Memorial Scholarship to a graduating senior of Greater Lawrence Technical School where she was once a student.
“College is so expensive, so this scholarship is a big help,” said Quevedo, 18. “I’m very grateful.”
Jillian Shannon, BSN, RS, a Health Assisting program instructor for seniors at Greater Lawrence Technical School, said Quevedo’s special combination of dedication and innate compassion for people in need make her “exceptional” for her chosen profession.
“Angie is a hard worker with a very high GPA, but she is also naturally caring and empathetic toward her patients,” Shannon said. “She’s going to do great things. We’re very proud of her.”
In addition to being a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Queveda has already received her OSHA-10, Basic Life Support, CPR and First Aid certifications. She works as a CNA at Nevins Nursing and Rehabilitation Centre in Methuen, where she cares for residents requiring assistance with daily living activities.
Quevedo said she is excited to take another step closer to fulfilling her lifelong dream of becoming a nurse. Initially inspired by her godmother, a physician in her native Dominican Republic, Quevedo said her interest in healthcare was further strengthened while helping to care for a family friend who suffered a stroke and moved to Nevins before passing away in 2018.
“I love helping people,” said Quevedo. “Many of my patients at Nevins have dementia, and they always remember me which is so special. I enjoy keeping them healthy, and I’m excited for the chance to help bring new life into the world through pediatrics.”
Patricia O’Brien, MBA, MS, RN, interim president of Tufts Medicine Care at Home, said she is looking forward to following Quevedo’s healthcare career in college and beyond.
“We are proud to present this scholarship to Angie to support her in reaching her educational and professional goals,” O’Brien said. “In turn, we know she will help countless others throughout our communities.”
