For 19 Beyond Soccer boys and girls, Columbus Day Weekend was much more than a long holiday weekend.
Thanks to the generosity of our neighbors (North Andover and Methuen Soccer Associations), the boys Strikerz team received their first-ever travel tournament invitation and three players from the Lawrence Her’ricanes rounded out a Methuen girls tournament squad. The tournament setting was electric, with more than 150 participating teams.
The Strikerz’ impressive and grueling round robin play against North Andover, Wilmington and North Reading qualified them for the semi-finals on Monday. The 7:30 a.m. semifinal showdown was very challenging, with dense morning fog and a spirited competitor, but ended in a Lawrence victory after two overtime periods. Only one hour later the Strikerz faced a formidable North Reading team in the finals. They came up short, losing 3-2 but pressured the North Reading goalie until the final whistle.
Jarelle, Joseiry and Celia also made a great impression on the U14 Methuen team, which also qualified for the semi-finals at 7:30 Monday morning. Joseiry was even recognized by teammates and coaches with the sportsmanship award following the 3rd round robin match. It could not have been awarded to a more deserving kid.
Experiences like these are so important for our young people. It provides them with opportunities to connect and share experiences with others outside city lines. We also had more than 40 moms, dads, siblings, friends, aunts, uncles and cousins cheering them on every step of the way. Lawrence, you would have been very proud. These kids exemplify teamwork, heart and community. They are getting really good at soccer too!
