State Representative Frank A. Moran (D-Lawrence, Andover and Methuen) welcomed over 350 students to the State House as part of Student Government Day. As Chairperson of the House Committee on Personnel and Administration, Representative Moran chaired the simulated joint committee hearing and executive session in the House Chamber. Additionally, Chair Moran organized for the Lawrence High School Girls Ensemble to sing the national anthem to begin the day’s proceedings.
“I was honored to join so many students for Student Government Day today, and it was even more of a thrill to welcome Lawrence High School’s Girls Ensemble as well as a few participants from my alma mater, Greater Lawrence Technical School. Events like these are part of the reason you get into government in the first place; to energize and begin to pass the torch of public service to the next generation. I’m glad that we had the opportunity to show students the entire legislative process and I look forward to witnessing these students continue being leaders in their respective communities. Thank you to Speaker DeLeo for your kind words and warm welcome of the students to the House Chamber,” said Chairperson Moran.
This year marked the 72nd annual Student Government Day at the Massachusetts State House. A number of state representatives, senators, members of the Supreme Judicial Court, and constitutional officers were on hand to speak to those in attendance. The event gathers students from across the Commonwealth to participate in simulated joint committee hearings and a joint session of the house and senate as students are assigned roles as both representatives and senators. Students are nominated by their schools with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education before their assignments are made.
