On Tuesday, January 14th, the Haverhill City Council Chambers was re-named the Theodore A. Pelosi, Jr. City Council
Chambers. The Ceremony was held in front of the City Council Chambers. Mayor Fiorentini in making the announcement said
that, “Mayor Pelosi was a great American, a great Mayor and a Great City Council President. He was City Council President
longer than anyone in our history and I am honored to name the City Council Chambers after him.”
Mayor Pelosi passed away in March of 2012. He was a lifelong resident of Haverhill, graduating from Haverhill High School in
1944. He went on to graduate from Mass Maritime Academy in 1946 as a battalion commander. After graduation, he joined the
Navy and achieved the rank of lieutenant. He went to Boston College, graduating in 1952 with a degree in Economics and then
to Boston College at night and received his MBA.
Mayor Pelosi worked for Western Electric for 30 years, retiring in 1982 as a quality control engineer. He summered on Cape Cod and was an adjunct professor in Economics at the University of Lowell. Mayor Pelosi was married for 60 years and had four children.
Mayor Pelosi was a Haverhill City Council for 20 years, served as President for 10 and in 1988 was elected Mayor of Haverhill, where he served for 6 years. City Council Chambers re-named after former mayor Mayor Pelosi served the community in
many capacities, he was on the Council of Aging Board, The Red Cross, Mass. Mayors’ Association and the Bradford Historic
Commission. He received numerous awards from B’nai B’rith, Boy Scouts of America, the Salvation Army and he was the Mass.
Maritime Alum of the Year.
Mayor Fiorentini stated: “I am honored to dedicate the chamber after Mayor Pelosi. He was a dedicated leader in our city and
a committed public servant. Mayor Pelosi served our community in many different capacities. He gave of himself to help
others. Mayor Pelosi set the bar for future Mayors, his public service and dedication to our city will be remembered for ever.”
