By any other name…
For the past couple of weeks, I have written about the case of Mayra Gonell who is being kept by her daughter Grechy Rosario uncommunicated since November of 2023. Last week two of her friends paid me a visit, delivering three letters of testimonials.
Luisa Caputo and Rosalía Mejía handed me their letters and one from Enith Martínez objecting to my previous articles. I was pleasantly surprised and welcomed the opportunity of having a discussion with someone knowledgeable of the situation.
These friends have the best in mind for their friend but, when I asked them as to the reason for Grechy to take away Mayra’s telephone, changed the number and did not give it back to her mother, there was nothing they could respond to.
I mentioned that not everyone is able to visit with her, including her cousin Angela. And the day – about one month ago – she begged her granddaughter to let her use her telephone to call her husband Leo and told him she wants to come back home. Their response to that is that they heard Mayra say the opposite.
Finally, the Lawrence Police sent me a copy of their report on a visit at which time they were led upstairs to witness that Mayra was sleeping. That doesn’t prove anything about her desire to be there. The police also are not asking my questions above.
You may read the letters to the editor on page 5.
I insist that by any other name, it’s still kidnapping.
