Lawrence Police Daily Log

The Police Daily Log on their webpage continues stuck on January 16, 2017.

No updates as yet so we can’t judge the work our officers are doing or how information is logged in about their activities.

Lee Manuel Viloria Paulino

Does anyone wonder what is happening with three different investigations going on in this case?

It’s been three months since his body was found and there is absolute silence on this case.  We are becoming complacent with crime in this city and it will only continue to grow, which is frightening.  No matter what the authorities say, we see it happening around us and the lack of information, hiding the truth will serve to give more confidence to the perpetrators.

Legislators’ salary increase

Massachusetts’ legislators overturned Governor Charlie Baker’s veto providing almost $18 million increase in pay to legislators, state officials and judges.

Lawmakers have a base salary of $62,547.  Here is a list of how our local politicians voted:

In the Senate – voting YES

KatholeenO’Connor Ives, Eileen Donoghue and Barbara L’Italien

In the Senate – voting NO

Bruce Tarr

Representatives – voting YES
Juana Matías, Brian Dempsey, Linda Dean Campbell, Thomas Golden Jr., Rady Mom, David M. Nangle and James R. Miceli.

Representatives – voting NO
Frank Moran, Diana DiZoglio and Coleen Garry

Representatives Leonard Mirra and James J. Lyons Jr. did not vote.

The annual stipends paid to Speaker Robert DeLeo and Senate President Stan Rosenberg would increase from $35,000 to $80,000, bringing their aggregate salaries to $142,547 and boost pay for judges by $25,000.

Baker said he would not accept the salary increase from $151,800 to $185,000, along with a new $65,000 housing allowance provided to the governor. Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito also planned to decline a raise to $165,000, Baker said.

Under the new law, Democratic Attorney General Maura Healey and Democratic state Treasurer Deb Goldberg would see their pay increase to $175,000.  Attorney General Healey and Treasurer Goldberg said they would not accept the increase in pay.

State Auditor Suzanne Bump, a Democrat, said she would accept a hike to $165,000.

Government Access Television

What a disgrace!

Channel 22 in Lawrence has been on the brink for a few weeks; first, one of the cameras facing the podium died and we could only watch the speakers back.  Then, the screen turned with a green tint and finally it went black.

City Council meetings have continued being held and some of the councilors have tried showing them through Facebook but the audio is barely understandable.

I was told that “parts are on order” but I like to remind the higher powers in this city that we pay for that service from our Comcast and Verizon cable bills and every time we turn around something happens.

Speaking of Verizon…

The 10 year anniversary of the contract between Verizon and the City of Lawrence is coming up in October.  The normal cycle should have been ascertaining the community two years before its expiration to find our needs and satisfaction and during the last year the negotiations for a new contract should take place.  Nothing like that has been done.

This process is a combined community effort; instead, it is done in closed sessions and the public paying the bills is kept in the dark.

The media and fake news

There has been much talk about the impact of the news media and I found something written by Domingo Martínez Madrid that says, “Often news from the mainstream media seems to give absolute protagonism to evil. However, the recipients of this message are not just the media. Due to the technological development, many individuals have the possibility to immediately share news and to disseminate them in a narrow way.  There are decisions with a clear ethical dimension.  You can spread beautiful and truthful stories, denounce injustices and promote solidarity, or you can launch false accusations, insults and spread all kinds of slander,” referring to “social networks that sometimes become sewers through which circulate the moral miseries of society. “
