Mr. B’s Sports Stories: CCHS Athletic Hall of Fame 2012

Frank Benjamin’s book “Mr. B’s Sports Memories” is for sale. At the recent Roast in his honor, Mr. B requested that the evening’s profit be dedicated to the Canal Street Boxing Gym, a place he greatly admires for the work they do with Lawrence youth. This is a great keepsake for anyone growing up in the Merrimack Valley.

On Thursday MAY 10th 2012 a dinner was held at the Atkinson Country Club in NH. A full house was settling in for a great night of food, speakers and award winners. G. Thomas Catalano a former class president and football Captain and Al Peterson a Raytheon retiree and now a Salisbury beach resident; Dr. Samuel D’Urso Class of 1962; Bishop William Mc Naughton, Class of 1944; Bridget Shaheen, Class of 1964, she is the Director of Lazarus House; Brother Ernest Beland, English Teacher; William Cowie, English Teacher; and Ernest Herman, Teacher, Class of 1979.

The audience was welcomed by Att. Michael Morris Master of Ceremonies, Class of 59.

Invocation by Bishop McNaughton, Class of 44. Dinner awards Atty. Morris, The Athletic Hall of Fame Awards; Atty Larry Rossi, Class of 1964; remark by the President of the School Brother Tom Long who grew up on Eutaw St. in Lawrence.

The first athletic award went to a hoop star Jonathon Cruz, 06, he played and garnered many local and State honors while playing for the red and blue including the local Tribune, the Boston Globe Super team, and The Boston Herald Dream Team, Jonathon was selected as the Tribune Player of the Year. He received an athletic scholarship and completed 4 years at Quinnipiac Universiity. While at CCHS he scored 1,000 points and pulled down 1,000 rebounds. He has been an assistant hoop coach on Hampshire St. and now works with kids at LHS.

Erin M Doherty ’04 earned letters in volleyball, and indoor and outdoor track and was the Class B running champ in the State in the 449m. As a junior Erin really showed her stuff as she became her school’s indoor Sprinter of the Year, an all MVC relay team memberand was picked to the Boston Globe’s All Scholastic indoor track team; as a senior she was named all-conference MVC in the 300 yard dash and the 4×400.

In her senior year in outdoor track she was the MVC champ in the triple jump 200m and a member of the 4×400 relay team and was the Class B Champ in the State. As she accepted her school’s fame award she ran to the stage and showed us all she hasn’t lost a step.

Ned Finneran ’96, Ned had a great career as a high school athlete as he Captained 3 sports namely football/indoor and outdoor track. As a sophomore Ned won titles in the Class AHMIAA shot put champion; MVC in football, he was elected the captain of football as a junior and was named to the MVC indoor track and all-Conference Team. Ned played in the Shriner football game and won the 12th player award he was named the Boston Globe and Herald All Scholastic team. He is a teachers Lawrence public schools.

Casey Grange ‘03, participating in soccer, basketball, outdoor track and softball, she was named Captain of all 3 sports in her senior year and was named as senior, junior she was named to the Tribune All Star and MVC ALL STAR team. As a senior she was named to the MVC and coach’s award for basketball and also an all-star softball player. She earned a scholarship to Bryant Uniiversity. Casey is now the head coach of girls hoop at CCHS and teaches at the Guilmette School in Lawrence.

Ryan Kearney, ’94, Ryan was a 2 sporter at t CC, baseball and hoop. He was a 4 year starter in baseball and a 2 year captain. As a junior he led his team to the Division 1 championship north title; he was named All MVC Conference in his junior and senior years as a pitcher and shortstop.

In hoop Kearney was a 3 year starter and 2 year Captain. As a junior he was named as a Tribune All Star in basketball and baseball; he was an MVC All Star in his junior year and a MVC all-Conference in his senior year. He won a 4 year Scholarship to UMass/Lowell. After graduation he played in the Cleveland Indians organization for 3 years. He now a lieutenant in the Londonderry police department and is a member of the swat team.
