Raeann Keeley-Pellerin: From Arlington Neighborhood Roots to Empowering Author
Raeann Keeley-Pellerin, a proud native of Lawrence’s Arlington neighborhood, has always had a deep connection to her community. Today, she’s giving back in more ways than one. As the Events Specialist at Lazarus House Ministries, Raeann supports individuals and families in need, while her debut book, Rising From the Ashes: Facing Anxiety and Depression After Loss, sheds light on a topic close to her heart—mental health.
For Raeann, the Arlington neighborhood isn’t just where she grew up; it’s the foundation of her identity. “This community shaped me,” she says. “It gave me my sense of compassion and resilience. Coming back to work here feels like coming full circle.”
A Personal Journey
Raeann’s journey to becoming an author was born out of pain and perseverance. After the loss of her adoptive mother, she found herself navigating an emotional labyrinth of grief, anxiety, and depression. “Losing my mom was devastating,” Raeann recalls. “But as I worked through my emotions, I realized there were things I had been carrying even before her passing.”
Her book is a deeply personal exploration of how grief intertwines with mental health. Through her own story, Raeann hopes to help others feel less alone and to encourage open conversations about the often-taboo topic of mental health.
Breaking the Silence
While working at Lazarus House Ministries, Raeann sees firsthand how mental health challenges can impact individuals and families struggling with poverty and homelessness. “In the world, we are so quick to address physical needs, but we often overlook mental health,” Raeann explains. “We need to make it okay to talk about not being okay. Changing the mindset that mental health is a taboo topic will take years, but every step forward will help.”
Her book is both a resource and a call to action. In Rising From the Ashes, Raeann invites readers to embrace the messy, non-linear journey of healing. She shares her struggles and triumphs with vulnerability and hope, aiming to normalize the ups and downs of mental health.
Staying Connected
Despite her new title as an author, Raeann remains grounded in her roots. She continues to give back to the Arlington neighborhood, not only through her work at Lazarus House but also by using her story to inspire those around her. “It’s not just about writing a book—it’s about building connections and letting people know they’re not alone in their struggles,” Raeann says.
Her hobbies, like photography and crafting, keep her creative spirit alive. She’s even known for taking playful photos of LEGO characters on her adventures, a nod to the lighter side of life she strives to embrace.
A Message for the Community
Raeann’s journey is one of resilience and hope, and her message is clear: “Grief, anxiety, and depression aren’t things you have to overcome alone. It’s okay to ask for help. And it’s okay not to be okay.”
Her story reminds us of the power of community, the importance of mental health, and the beauty of rising from the ashes, even after the most profound losses.
