Representative Frank A. Moran Announces S.A.F.E. and Senior Safe Grants for district

State Representative Frank A. Moran (D-Lawrence, Andover and Methuen) joins Governor Baker and Secretary of Public Safety and Security Daniel Bennett in announcing Student Awareness of Fire Education (S.A.F.E.) and Senior SAFE grant funds in the Rep.’s district.

Each respective Fire Department within the Representatives district will receive the following grant funding:

Fire Department Name 2018 S.A.F.E. Grant 2018 Senior SAFE Grant

Andover Fire Department $5,407 $2,813

Lawrence Fire Department $6,707 $3,009

Methuen Fire Department $5,407 $2,813

“Fire safety and prevention is a critical component of education for both children and adults of all ages. I am thrilled anytime we can provide this important educational opportunity here in our community which will undoubtedly help the brave men and women of our Fire Departments as well. I appreciate Representative Campbell’s work in continuing to file these amendments, and I thank the Governor as well as the legislature at large for expanding this program to include seniors,” said Representative Moran.

Started twenty-three years ago by the legislature, the S.A.F.E. program has resulted in a 72% reduction in average annual child fire deaths. Because of this success, the Senior SAFE program was created to share this same education with senior populations across the Commonwealth who are often the most vulnerable in these situations. This initiative will educate seniors on fire prevention, general home safety, and how to be better prepared in the event of a fire.

“As someone who has filed amendments in successive budgets to protect SAFE grant funding from being cut I recognize how critical these programs are to ensuring fire safety and developing an understanding of the risks involved among our youth and elder populations. Thank you to the administration for working with us to bring this funding to Methuen,” said Representative Linda Campbell.

“The S.A.F.E and Senior Safe grant programs have a proven track records of success, and the funds allocated to the Lawrence Fire Department are sorely needed resources that are instrumental to the goal of educating our residents, and preventing child fire and senior fire related deaths. I am profoundly thankful to the Lawrence Fire Department for their incredible efforts to keep Lawrence safe, and I am firmly committed to continuing to advocate on behalf of this important initiative”, said Representative Juana Matias.

“These important funds will greatly help our local fire departments in efforts to better-equip both children and seniors – our most vulnerable populations – in the event of a fire, while also providing the resources and tools to prevent a fire from taking place,” said Representative Diana DiZoglio.
