It was 1948 and the Central Catholic football team was getting ready for two big games. Dick Moynihan the coach was looking to have them clicking on all cylinders when they take on St. John’s of Concord, NH, their big game against Mt. Saint Michael’s of New York. Brother Johannes was the Athletic Director and the coaches’ right hand aide was J. Kenny Brooks.
Ted Morris was starting for the red and blue and is a senior with great size, speed and athletic ability. He has played for his school for 4 years. He learned the fundamentals playing end for coach Brother Linus as a freshman. He has played varsity ever since. He is the brother of attorney Michael Morris still residing locally and a solid CC backer.
Ted has been a thorn in the side of many of his opponents from his end positions throughout his career in the Catholic Conference. On defense opposing coaches and quarterbacks have been influenced to run to the other end on running plays. His ability to run under the long bombs thrown by his rifled arm qb Frank Sexton makes him a real threat at all times. This coming day will allow people to compare him with another great pass receiver from St. John’s namely Ernie Opperman who will line up on defense against Morris.
Ted is still making big plays in life these days as he has been a Marist Brother all these years. He was a unanimous choice to be inducted to the CCHS Hall of Fame.
In the 1946 season Lou Gleason fractured his shoulder but he came back again this year to reclaim his center position. The injury didn’t dampen his spirit and this season he seems better than ever. Big and rangy he has improved in every game to steady a big and fast line. On defense he is a linebacker backing up the right side.
Lou was a good hockey player and later furthered his schooling at Notre Dame. In later years he became the superintendent at the Greater Lawrence Vocational School. The gridiron at the West Andover School is named after him. His son Pedro was a 3 sporter at the school. He’s retired now and tends his hobby of carving out wooden ducks.
Here’s another CCHS Hall of Famer. Bob Sacuzzo, on his way to the Hall had the task of filling the shoes of such starring fullbacks as Phil Perrino and Miles Moran. Although only a junior he has shown he is equal to the task. A hard charging and aggressive back he can also pick up those necessary tough yards on quickies through the line. He and Brother Ron became teammates on the CCHS hoop team.
Dick Collins also coached baseball and is considered by players and opposing coaches as one of the all time area great mentors. Another shoo in for induction.
The upcoming Mt. St Michael’s game is an annual home event and becomes a good weekend event between two Marist schools.
Each team brings their cross country teams to this event and a local race is run in conjunction with the game. At the local stadium it is something to see these high school kids crossing the finish line at halftime of the football game.
It’s similar to see the runners at the Olympics come into the stadium.
