Mr. B’s Sports Stories: Lawrence High October 1950

Coach Jimmy Jordan is readying his gridiron boys to take on a strong Somerville team. The game will be played at Memorial
Stadium on Sunday at 2:’30 pm. Yes, many of the Essex County League games were played on Sunday before pro teams pushed the kids off the fields.

Starting for the blue and white were, Jackie Donahue at right end, he later works for and retires from the local postal service.

Pat Burke at right tackle, he later become a captain for Michigan State leading his team to the Rose Bowl.

Louie Giarrusso is the left guard and later becomes a fireman for the City of Lawrence. Louie passed away at a too young age and leaves offspring on the Methuen fire department. His wife Helen and daughter Linda still live in Methuen.

The now legendary Bill Quinlan, later a big star at Michigan State also playing in the Rose Bowl. He still resides in Lawrence after a tremendous career with the Green Bay Packers for Vince Lombardi, with teammates Paul Hornung, Bart Starr and Jerry Kramer. Bill was Lancer center.

Phil Nardone was the left tackle and later becomes an Andoverite. Bob Fitzgerald was at left guard and in the future stars at
Northeastern Univ. and a coach at LHS and the Greater Lawrence Technical School and still later that school’s Athletic Director.
George Fraser from Andover a speedster was starting at left end and was a speedster.

Leon Vitale will start at qb and still lives in our area.

Brad Smith a Methuen transfer student also a speed burner was at left halfback and the quiet man Johnny D’Angelo is switching from qb as Jordan wants to utilize his speed and set up a super fast backfield. John lives in Methuen and stars as a great racquetball in a local sports club.

Terry Sweeney fills the fullback slot and although a pretty big kid he can speed with the fastest in the league. He goes on to star for the Tennessee Vols in college.

The LHS Band will be observing their 25th birthday this year and it was organized in the spring by Mr. Robert Sault who previously taught math at the school. The athletic advisory board provided $2,000 to purchase the basic instruments and rehearsals, which were held twice a week all summer. This group of 55 musicians practiced diligently to be ready for this football season.

Driver Education is now compulsory for juniors and an elective for seniors and must be taken for one period a week. Eddie Webb a Tower Hill resident then and later a hoop coach at LHS will be assisted by Miss Powers as instructors of this course. Students will be taught rules of the road, safety and road courtesy.

The popular and bright Florence McDuffie has been selected as the editor of the school newspaper for this year. She is a member of the math, speakers, and German clubs. Appointed to the staff were Patricia Burke, Bernadine Kennedy, Elizabeth Marsden, Jane Fredette, Rosemary Regan, Mary Ronsavali, Virginia Viel, Arthur Mahoney, and Claire Kennedy.
