On Thursday, Jan. 19, thousands of American Federation of Teachers members, parents, students and community allies all over the country staged demonstrations against the president-elect’s agenda on the day before he was to be sworn in. In Lawrence, the protest it was held in front of the Oliver Partnership School.
According to them, part of Donald Trump’s agenda includes dismantling public education and they want to ensure that all students have the opportunity to live their lives and pursue their dreams free from fear. They were part of the Alliance to Reclaim Our Schools national day of action to protect our schools, colleges and universities, communities and students.’
Our public schools help our country fulfill a collective promise: to accept and teach every child seeking an education. Public education isn’t a partisan issue; 90 percent of American children attend public schools, and they deserve leaders who will strengthen those schools, not destabilize or defund them.
We need to send the message loud and clear. We will stand strong with our students, our schools, our colleges and universities, our members and our communities.
