OFFICIAL OPENING OF THE PUERTO RICAN
CULTURE INSTITUTE
LAWRENCE– The Board of Directors of the Instituto Cultural de Puerto Rico, Inc. officially announces the launching of its first and most important cultural event in the city on January 6, 2021 at 7:00PM on virtual platforms of Facebook Live and YouTube. This inaugural event will consist of a welcoming speech from its President, Jose A. Davila to formally present the mission and purpose of this nonprofit organization incorporated in Massachusetts. The purpose of this organization is to extend the cultural and artistic legacy of Puerto Rico to the world.
As the special guest we will enjoy the musical concert from Puerto Rico of Juan R. Nieves and his Legado group. Nieves, a musical talent from Humacao since four years of age plays the Puerto Rican “cuatro” (a small to mid-sized viola shaped type of classical guitar with 10 strings and tuned in fourths) Nieves is a student with special scholarships at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. His hard work since a child and his participation in the Rondalla of Humacao, his Studies at the Escuela Libre de Music (Music school) and his participation in the Municipal Music Band of Humacao have taken him to the professional level he has today. Nieves has done tours in different countries such as Holland, France, Belgium, and Spain. This cuatro guitar artist believes that, “ My mission and my dream is open doors and take this wonderful instrument to places that have never seen or listen to its beauty.”
The President of the Instituto Cultural de Puerto Rico, José A. Dávila, expressed his joy by saying: “What motivated me to this project was the need to have an entity that could help us elevate our Puerto Rican culture. I believe in our youth and my focus is that we need to show our Puerto Rican youth and from other cultures our country’s culture. It is through programs where they can learn to play the Puerto Rican cuatro and many other musical and cultural skills. It will be my pleasure and the team to show our people that there are ways to develop our intellect through this brilliant project.”
