Gifford leads the polls for the Third District of the Massachusetts Congress

UMass Lowell and Boston Globe allied to conduct the first public survey on the race for the 3rd Massachusetts Congressional District to fill the post that is currently occupied by Niki Tsongas, who announced last year that she would retire from Congress.

“The big winner in this survey is undoubtedly Rufus Gifford, who has demonstrated a great aptitude in leading the race in the district and to close an early name recognition gap…”, said Prof. Joshua Dyck, co-chair Director of the UMass Lowell Public Opinion Center, which conducted the survey in partnership with the Boston Globe.

KEY RESULTS

Rufus Gifford, former US ambassador EEUU in Denmark, he leads a group of 13 candidates with the support of 11 percent of potential voters.

88 percent of likely Democratic primary voters said they disapprove of the way Donald Trump is handling his job as president.

Republican Gov. Charlie Baker of Massachusetts has a strong approval rating among likely Democratic primary voters in the 3rd Congressional District with 80 percent.

The 13 Democratic candidates have been invited to participate in the debates sponsored by the UMass Lowell Public Opinion Center and the Boston Globe on April 29. For more information about the free public event, visit www.uml.edu/debate.
