It is already traditional, as part of the activities of the Irish Heritage Month, to dedicate one day to reading to Lawrence Catholic Academy students at the South Lawrence Library.
Following that tradition, last Wednesday, the 28th of March, Susan Geraghty Kruswell, Acting Irish Vice-Consul General in Boston and Anne Byrne, staff member assigned to the Consulate of Ireland in Boston visited the South Boston Library where they were greeted by Jessica Valentin, director of the Lawrence Library, Susan Fink, President of LAOH and Bill Sullivan, President – Division 8 AOH.
Upon their arrival, Bill Sullivan introduced both visitors to a group of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade students and immediately, Anne Byrne began reading from Gail Gibbons’ book about the life of St. Patrick and the History of St. Patrick’s Day.
The absence of snakes in Ireland gave rise to the legend that they had been banished by Patrick chasing them at sea after they attacked him during a 40-day fast he was undertaking on the top of a hill. This was one of the topics that created the most interest among children and generated many questions.
