Long before they opened their doors at 8:00 A.M. on Wednesday,
November 18 2009, hundreds of needy people gathered in front
of Food for the World Pantry located at 247 Essex Street in
Lawrence.
By closing time, at 5:00 P.M. they had distributed 1,175
Thanksgiving turkeys along with 2 Lb. bags of rice, canned
beans, boxes of cereal, ground beef, etc. When they ran out of
turkeys, the people who remained in line received frozen
chickens.
First to be admitted were the handicapped and every one who
needed help.
Julia Polanco, Executive Director of Food for the World
appreciates the help of the volunteers. “Thanks to them we can
keep helping these people”, she said.
Polanco said that the center receives food throughout the
Greater Boston Food Bank and cash contributions from several
businesses and private citizens which help with their
expenses. |
