Where are they now?
By Christine Lewis
christinelewis@rumbonews.com

There is something very seductive about old pictures; a good picture can tell stories unmatched by mere words. In 1973 writer Andrew Coburn went to Common and Newbury Streets in Lawrence and interviewed various shopkeepers. At the time, Lawrence had a growing Latino population and a declining Italian-American population. This period of transition was reflected in the stores and in the pictures. Younger Latino immigrants were taking the place of the older shopkeepers.

So much is known about Lawrence before the Latin wave but so little is known about the early years when the first Latinos moved to Lawrence. History didn’t stop in 1958. It’s hard to believe but some of the first Latino immigrants to Lawrence have been here for 50 years! What was it like then? Who were the first shop owners? Where are they now? How has life changed?

I’d love to see more pictures from this era, of the city and the then new residents.

I am including some of the pictures from the article. Does anyone know who these people are and where they might be today?

Thank you.
