Since the announcement made by Senator Susan C. Tucker
(D-Andover) that she will not seek reelection in the up-coming
elections, several names have been mentioned as possible
candidates to replace her. So far, Francisco Urena, Lawrence
Veterans Services Department director since 2007, is the only
one who has talked to Rumbo.
Urena, 29, a Marine tank commander during his tour to Iraq,
received injuries while in combat and still carries particles
of a grenade incrusted in his jaw.
“I have not made up my mind as yet, but I have a committee
exploring the possibilities,” said Francisco Urena, a Lawrence
resident. “First, I need to know the needs of the towns of
Andover, Dracut and Tewksbury.”
Urena, an Independent, changed party lines on February 17 to
become a Republican. “I want to be associated with a more
conservative group,” he explained. If he runs and wins, he
plans to work to bring the Massachusetts Sales Tax back to 5%.
“Being so close to New Hampshire, Lawrence is suffering a lot
because of that sales tax,” he said.
Urena said that several people from Andover and Tewksbury had
called him encouraging to run but, “I don’t want to jump into
a race where I can’t see how I can make a change,” ended
Urena. “You will be the first to know once I make up my mind,”
promised Urena. |
