Daniel Rivera was sworn-in as Mayor of Lawrence by Senator Elizabeth Warren in a ceremony held in the theater of the North Common Educational Complex, former Lawrence High School on Saturday, January 4, 2014 at 9:00 am.
District 16th State Representative Marcos Devers sworn members of the Lawrence Technical School Committee as well as members of the Lawrence School Committee. Also District 17th State Representative Frank Moran swore in the members of the city council.
This ceremony was originally scheduled to take place on Friday, January, 3rd 2014, in front of the steps of Lawrence City Hall at 12 noon but the snow storm and cold wave which hit the city forced plans to be changed.
In an earlier, private ceremony, held on January 2nd at the City Council Chamber, Rivera and members of the Lawrence School Committee and Greater Lawrence Technical School had already been officially sworn-in by Carole Morin, Assistant to the City Clerk William Maloney who, at the same time was swearing-in the new group of elected councilors in a ceremony held in the auditorium of the new Lawrence High School.
Immediately thereafter, they held their first meeting. Councilor at-Large Modesto Maldonado was elected President of the Council 9-0. District C Councilor Kendrys Vasquez nominated Maldonado for president. Then in turn, Maldonado nominated Councilwoman at-Large Nilka Alvarez-Rodriguez for Vice President of the Council, being elected also 9-0.
Following the program of festivities on Saturday, January 4 held an Inaugural Gala in the halls of The Lawrence Elks. The next day, Sunday, January 5th was declared Family Day Celebration with ice skating on the Common, thanks to the great work of DPW workers, who managed to hold enough water in front of the Bernstein main stage. Once frozen it served the kids, their parents and even grandparents to enjoy ice skating.
That night, at the new Lawrence High School auditorium, churches of various denominations participated in a concert of Unity and Prayer where some 200 faithful prayed together for a better city.
Among the churches that participated were Ministerio Hogar de Restauración, Iglesia Metodista Primitiva, Iglesia Adventista de la Calle Salem, Iglesia Adventista de South Broadway, Latter Day Saints, Saint Patrick’s Choir, Iglesia Cristiana de Getsemaní, Centro de Adoración, St. Mary’s, St. Agustine of Andover; and Monte de Oración.
