No doubt that this February will be remembered for a long, long time and we will be very happy when it passes, taking all the snow away. In all the time we have been in this country we don’t remember a month of February with so much snowfall.

For residents on the north side of the city, where narrow streets abound, the amount of snow has created a major problem. To this we must add that most of the houses are three stories with multiple apartments without space to park vehicles unless it is on the street.

All this has brought frustration among many of our residents, although we are not alone. Watching the news from Boston and other cities, we can see that we are not the only ones who are in this situation. Fortunately, both the city of Boston and Lawrence have received help in the form of equipment and labor provided by members of the
National Guard who have come to reinforce the staff of our Department of Public Works which is struggling day and night to keep the city open.

At the risk of being called alarmists or believe that we are soothsayers, we would like the city and its residents to begin worrying about possible flooding once all this snow that has fallen begins to melt.

Just remember the events that we lived of May 2006, when many residents fled their homes and all their belongings were ruined, makes us think that we should take preventive measures before the waters start rising.

Better safe than sorry!
