Mayor William Lantigua issued an executive order indicating that Captain James Fitzpatrick assumed the role of Chief of Police effective Tuesday, September 3, 2013. On that date, Chief John Romero relinquished all powers and duties of the position.

“With Chief Romero’s retirement, we have a large void to fill in this department and I am working diligently to select a person that I feel is best for the Lawrence Police Department and the Citizens of Lawrence,” stated Mayor Lantigua. “Captain Fitzpatrick is a trusted and worthy member of our department and I feel confident that until I make my final decision he will serve our City well”, further stated Lantigua.

Captain Fitzpatrick is a 20 year veteran of the Lawrence Police Department and currently serves as the Prosecuting Officer. “Over the past two months I have focused tirelessly on this selection process and I am energized with the caliber of law enforcement professionals that have expressed interest in being our next Police Chief. I thank all of them and appreciate their patience as I continue with my decision making process,” emphasized Lantigua.

Mayor Lantigua expects to appoint a new Police Chief within the next 30 days.
