The DeMoulas family, who owns and operates the Market Basket stores has been at odds for the longest time but since June of this year, when the board controlled by Arthur S. DeMoulas managed to fire his cousin, Arthur T. DeMoulas, is when the proverbial hit the fan.
Some management, employees and warehouse workers, in their free time, have been picketing in front of the 71 stores the company has thru Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Others, more radical, who refuse to work for the new CEO, have lost their jobs.
A recent job fair that was attended only by a handful of job seekers should give Arthur S. and his board, a subliminal message that not even in this economy, with rampant unemployment, people want to work for him.
Intelligent shoppers have joined the group of loyal employees, concerned that the new management wants to increase prices to benefit the shareholders. It was not a secret that Market Basket has the better prices of the region without sacrificing quality.
This group of hard working women and men are writing a new book on the relationship between labor and management. They are not asking for more salary, they are not asking for more benefits. What they are asking has never been seen before: the return of their beloved CEO Arthur T.
We don’t know either of the two DeMoulas, but after dealing for over 20 years with their employees, we are convinced that so many people can’t be wrong. For that reason, they have our support!
