Since the Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Continental Congress in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776, this date has become the most important holiday in our country. The first official state celebration of the Fourth of July day was recognized by the Massachusetts legislature in 1781. Boston was the first city to officially designate as the Fourth of July holiday in 1783.
It is a day of rejoicing, especially for us immigrants who have arrived in this country in search of the freedoms we lost in ours. It is a day to thank those that for 238 years have remained the cornerstone of democracy and a haven for those who wish to make it their homeland.
We believe that the phrase “American by Choice” is very appropriate and has a special significance on this day. We choose to live in the United States because few countries in the world allow us the freedom to criticize it and love it at once. This country has faults and we must all work together to correct them, and in the midst of differences, also join in the celebrations. No country respects differences of opinion in the way we do here, something that many should learn from them.
In Lawrence, we celebrate July 4 in two different ways. On July 3, the city calls us all to meet at Veterans Memorial Stadium to enjoy many planned activities including the traditional and classic fireworks at nightfall.
The next day, at 11 AM, the Friends of Lawrence Heritage State Park has an open invitation to their ninth annual Old-Fashioned 4th of July Celebration. We advise you to go, take your children and be amazed at the difference between the two celebrations.
This July 3 and 4, take the time to get to know the country a little better. Take your children to enjoy both activities, and learn about the history of their country and understand why you have chosen to live here.
