Do Your Civic Duty

On Tuesday, the 17th of this month, we hope, if you qualify, that you would be willing to vote, and vote!

This election has the characteristics of an historic event of great proportions. For all we know, never in the history of Lawrence have been such few candidates “Anglos” for the mayor’s office. Actually, just one, as the rest of the applicant pool is composed of five Latinos including the incumbent who is also Latino.

That proves that we Latinos are willing to maintain control of the city where many of us decided to establish our homes.

We say of great proportions because considering the financial situation, the city has improved, unemployment is down but not nearly as intended, the chaotic school system inherited is on the path of real change, all interested candidates have jump into the arena with the promise of changing the image of the city which, according to them has been damaged by the current administration.

As usual, we will not tell you who you should vote for. It’s your civic duty to study the platform presented by each candidate to make the right decision. The only advice we want to give our readers is not to vote for your own interests or because the candidate is your friend or your neighbor, three things humanly impossible to achieve, but for the one you consider to be the best for the city and citizenry in general.

Remember, vote on September 17. It’s your civic duty!
