Editorial: Zoila Disla’s bad example

The new elected officials in Lawrence took their oath this week to the satisfaction of some of the residents who think we have a well-balanced Council.

The optimism is even greater towards the School Committee which has been a disaster during the last two years. Not all districts had been represented by the lack of interest in participating. This year it has been quite the opposite; there were candidates who, at the last minute, ran a stickers campaign.

The hope is that these new members are aware and we can depend on them. But to everyone’s surprise, one of the members elected to the School Committee of the Greater Lawrence Technical School began making news from day one because of her absence.

With the excuse of being on vacation, according to information received in our office, the newly elected member Zoila Disla did not go to her own inauguration. Considering that the date of the inauguration was already marked according to the City Charter, her attitude has left 2,812 citizens who gave her the victory, very disgusted.

If Zoila Disla was not interested in taking the oath of office next to her colleagues, perhaps it is a sign that she may be regretting having run for office. It could also be that she may have realized that it will interfere with her Hispanic Week responsibilities.

Since she has not been sworn into office, she could decide not to accept it and allow us to find someone who is really willing to do it.

She has the last word!
