The year 2015 begins with a new governor in Massachusetts, Republican by the way, who already learned that there are very difficult times ahead. According to reports, the state budget has a deficit of $325 million, to which the outgoing governor is trying to make some cuts to ease the situation for the incoming governor. Naturally, someone will be affected by these cuts.
Locally, the disagreement between the President of the Council and the Mayor of Lawrence which began in 2014 was not resolved. The two points are well documented in this issue and the reader is invited to peruse the statement by the President of the Council and the interpretation and answer from the Mayor.
In short, the Council President is concerned about how the mayor hires and fires employees without consulting with the Council, considering it illegal and this could lead the city into bankruptcy because of many demands will be in the millions. There are some already in the works. While this situation is not resolved, we predict one tumultuous 2015.
Although we are aware that any economic difficulty across the state will be reflected immediately in a city like Lawrence, always in need of help, and our problems would only aggravate the situation. We’d like to think we’re wrong.
As regards to Rumbo, the year 2014 ended with the results we had planned. Thanks to advertisers and readers who honor us with their preference, the expansion that we related in our January 1st, 2014 editorial gave the positive result we expected. The weekly distribution to sites that were reached before every two weeks attracted the attention of many businesses outside the area that favored us with their advertising.
On a personal level, we are pleased with the success we achieved as a result of our hard work and we wish all the community our best wishes for a healthy and prosperous 2015.
Happy New Year!
