For us living in this area of the country, summer does not start until next week; to be exact and according to the calendar, on Thursday, June 21, we can almost say that Summer has arrived! The cold temperatures while they are still cool, the snow although this year it was not as much compared with previous winters and the ice that kept us indoors have already been left behind; however, we are now going through a period of rain interrupted only by short hours of sunshine.
Fortunately for those of us who have lived in New England for some time, we are already used to these changes, so it is time to enjoy our favorite outdoor activities. It could be working in the yard or garden, playing our favorite sport, or simply cooking outside with family and friends. It is also time to enjoy the festivals that this season brings us each year.
The Hispanic Week pageants have been left behind after selecting a series of talented young Latinas who will represent our community for the rest of the year, especially during the festivities that we still have to celebrate. The Gala Dinner which replaced the VIP Lunch of yesteryear has also passed, and so have the Mexican, Puerto Rican and Dominican Nights. The Ecuadorian Night will be celebrating when this edition of Rumbo begins to circulate leaving the Colombian Night and Peruvian Nights for last.
We missed the Salvadoran and Haitian Nights that showed us their culture and customs, especially the taste of their cuisine. We also missed the Country of Guatemala that did not participate in the Hispanic Week Festivals this year. We hope that the Guatemalan Cultural Group will once again be part of this tradition.
We take this opportunity to join the pain that the people of Guatemala and the Guatemalans scattered around the world are going through, particularly those in our country who left relatives behind when they left their land in search of better opportunities. Today we tell them, you are not alone, we are with you for whatever you need from us.
